The monument was originally erected to a Soviet pilot who died near the village of Syryevo, Moscow Region. Local residents found and buried him. Search teams later established his identity and the circumstances of his death: 20-year-old Sergeant Sergei Antokhin from Ryazan Region, killed on 30 September 1942 while flying a Tomahawk fighter. In 1975 the pilot’s remains were reinterred in Selyatino.
The memorial now also bears commemorative plaques with the names of soldiers of the 87th sanitary company who died of wounds in 1941–1942, and since 2012 a plaque in memory of residents of Krutilovo village who fought for Moscow.
