Chita customs find CITES-listed teeth and deer-blood tea

According to an FCS Russia press release, officers at the Zabaikalsk crossing found “deer-blood tea, wolf teeth and bear teeth” in a tourist bound for Manzhouli, China.

Chita customs seized 11 wolf canines, three bear canines and tea made from dried deer blood during selective control. The foreign national filed no declaration or export permits and said the items were gifts for a friend.

Expert analysis linked the derivatives to brown bear and grey wolf — CITES-listed threatened species. Export requires a passenger declaration and permits from Rosprirodnadzor.

Two administrative cases were opened under Articles 16.2(1) (non-declaration) and 16.3 (breach of bans and restrictions). The traveller faces a fine of up to double the value of the goods and confiscation.
