Jewellery smuggling worth RUB 5.7m stopped in Grozny

The Main Anti-Smuggling Directorate and Mineralnye Vody customs detained two Russian women arriving from Istanbul. Under outer clothing they found three bracelets and two rings in white metal with transparent stone inlays.

The passengers were sisters. They said the jewellery was for personal use and that they were unaware of customs rules.

Examination showed new items made of 750 white gold. The bracelets contained 121 diamonds totalling 25.41 carats; the rings held 10 diamonds weighing 6.56 carats. The goods were seized.

Two criminal cases were opened under Part 1 of Article 226.1 of the Criminal Code (illicit movement of strategically important goods). The penalty is up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RUB 1 million.
