Sheremetyevo customs officers found a jar with nearly 200 g of cannabis in the baggage of a foreign national who had arrived from China; the banned substance was hidden among personal belongings. Source: FCS Russia.
The passenger was stopped on the green channel during a spot check. An X-ray scan of her suitcase revealed a container wrapped in polyethylene film containing a green substance. She said it was medication for back pain.
The jar was seized and sent for forensic testing, which confirmed cannabis (marijuana).
A criminal case was opened under Article 229.1(3) of the Russian Criminal Code for smuggling narcotic drugs across the customs border in a large amount; the offence carries a penalty of up to twenty years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to RUB 1 million.
