Mr Ashkalov has served in the customs authorities since 1994, starting as an inspector at Saratov Customs. He later held senior posts at Saratov and Mineralnye Vody customs offices and at the North Caucasus and Volga customs offices.
In April 2025 he was appointed head of the FCS Main Directorate for Post-Release Customs Control.
