Customs officers found diamonds and sapphires worth 1.5 million roubles in a parcel from India. Staff of the Central Postal Customs and Privolzhskaya Operational Customs prevented the illegal movement of precious stones addressed to a resident of Samara.
The stones were detected during parcel screening: four diamonds and eleven sapphires were packed in two zip bags wrapped in newspaper. The sender declared a value of 300 Indian rupees.
Expert examination confirmed the minerals are natural diamonds and sapphires. Current law prohibits sending them in international postal items.
The recipient was detained at a post office in Samara. A criminal case was opened under Article 226.1(1) of the Criminal Code, punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to one million roubles. The case file has been sent to court.
