Chita Region customs officers found a wolf skull and upper and lower jaw bones in a truck driver’s backpack during inspection at the Zabaikalsk border crossing on the route to China.
The violator is a foreign national. He said he had bought a “dog skull” in Irkutsk and was unaware that such items must be declared.
Forensic examination identified the remains as a grey wolf (Canis lupus) of the canine family.
An administrative case was opened under Article 16.3 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offences for breach of export restrictions; a fine with confiscation may follow.
