At an international conference in Bishkek on intellectual property as a driver of business growth in EAEU countries, an EEC representative outlined the Union’s updated approaches to protecting IP rights and combating counterfeit goods. Source: Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
Ernar Bakenov, Director of the EEC Department for Entrepreneurial Development, highlighted existing international treaties on coordinated IP protection, collective management of copyright and related rights, and the emerging regional system for EAEU trademarks and geographical indications of goods.
He said the Commission has harmonised two draft international IP agreements under the strategic directions for Eurasian economic integration through 2025. These include coordinated approaches to fighting online IP infringements and a search service for industrial property registered in Union member states.
Bakenov also described work under the implementation plan for the “Eurasian Economic Path” declaration: recommendations to raise filing activity and approaches to legal protection of IP objects created with or by artificial intelligence. Member states regularly monitor enforcement practice in the IP field.
Between 2014 and 2024, authorities detected about 140 million units of counterfeit products across EAEU territories. The conference was organised by LES Russia, an association with more than 60 members from Russia, several CIS countries and the Baltic states.
