On 17–18 June EEC Board Chairman Bakytzhan Sagintayev took part in the Russia–ASEAN summit in Kazan, where leaders of twelve countries and major international bodies discussed integration cooperation, including on the Eurasian space. Source: Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
At a Russia–ASEAN Plus outreach breakfast Sagintayev said the EAEU and ASEAN rank among the world's most dynamic integration groupings. Together they represent the interests of nearly one billion people and form a large economic space with scope for growth and technological development.
Despite differences in geography and economic structure, both unions share the goal of improving conditions for business and boosting competitiveness. Their strategic agendas overlap in digital transformation, energy, infrastructure, food security and macroeconomic stability.
An EEC–ASEAN memorandum of understanding was signed in 2018; most ASEAN states also have cooperation memoranda or free trade agreements with the EAEU — including Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Myanmar.
In 2025 a new EEC–ASEAN cooperation programme for 2026–2030 was approved. Sagintayev said he expects its implementation to take regional interaction to a new level.
