Working meeting of FCS Russia head Valery Pikalev and South Ossetia Government Chairman Marat Kambolov

FCS Russia head Valery Pikalev and Marat Kambolov, Chairman of the Government of the Republic of South Ossetia, agreed at a working meeting on steps to speed up traffic at Nizhny Zaramag — the only checkpoint on the Russian–South Ossetian border section. Source: FCS Russia.

They noted that the crossing handles around one thousand personal vehicles each day in both directions; roughly four fifths are registered in EAEU member states.

Passenger traffic currently runs at about five times the checkpoint’s design capacity. During the peak tourist season this can cause queues at the border.

To cut waiting times, the post now operates around the clock and customs has strengthened duty shifts.

The discussion also covered upgrading internal infrastructure and streamlining the temporary import procedure for vehicles. The participants linked bilateral economic ties to the shared cultural traditions of Russia and South Ossetia.
