On 31 July the Eurasian Economic Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat held a seminar on the technical regulation systems of the EAEU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Source: Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
Experts from the EEC Department of Technical Regulation and Accreditation outlined the Union’s common system, its current status and development priorities. ASEAN representatives covered conformity assessment and the use of accreditation to expand trade ties.
The agenda included EAEU safety requirements for light-industry goods, electrical equipment, rubber and rubber products, and foodstuffs such as tea, coffee, fish and seafood. Participants also discussed placing goods on the Union market and supervising compliance with safety rules; the Commission’s delegation reviewed ASEAN approaches to food safety regulation and standardisation.
Serik Kusainov, Director of the EEC department, said joint seminars help align approaches and show partners how product requirements are applied in the five EAEU countries. Joe Soe Lwin, Chair of the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality, stressed that as trade between the regions grows, mutual understanding of technical regulation and conformity assessment is essential for market access and product safety.
The sides agreed to continue the dialogue. Officials from several EEC departments, ASEAN national authorities and ASEAN Secretariat units took part. ASEAN currently comprises 11 Southeast Asian states.
