Valery Pikalyov announced plans for a memorial complex on central office grounds so colleagues can pay tribute to staff currently on combat duty.
Deputy head Dmitry Zhukov said more than 380 customs officers have taken part in the operation, 119 remain in service, and 17 died on mission.
Zhukov stressed that honouring heroes is a duty of the living and that bereaved families receive the service’s support. The memorial is to be funded by voluntary donations from customs officials and will perpetuate those defending Russia’s interests.
